Camon

1 km away from La Besse Campsite: visit Camon in Ariège

Camon, one of France's most beautiful villages

The Village of Camon, with the official “Most Beautiful Villages in France” label, the only one in Ariège, will surprise you with its beauty, its little streets, Benedictine abbey and dry-stone cabins.

The village emblem is the rose, and it is nicknamed the village of one hundred roses. A rush bush is planted in front of each house in the village, resulting in some beautiful colours, as well as wonderful fragrances in May.

The village of Camon stands in a loop in the River Hers. The village walk called the “Tour de l’eau” (“Water Tour”) is a pleasant and shaded walk or run in summer.

There is a magnificent abbey that once depended on Lagrasse Abbey. Today it is privately owned, but the Tourist Office organises tours. Don’t miss a visit to church, either.

On the hill overlooking the village, the inhabitants grow grapes and cereals, which is why the dry-stone cabins were built. The Tourist Office organises guided tours of the cabins.
