The medieval fortified town of Mirepoix

10 minutes away from La Besse Campsite: visit MIREPOIX in Ariège

A magnificent medieval fortified town

The fortified town of Mirepoix is a surprising sight. The half-timbered buildings standing in a wooden gallery include some very beautiful houses.

Mirepoix was built as a “bastide” (fortified town), with the central square enhanced by cafés, bars and small shops providing a very special charm. It has developed with streets at right angles and horizontally. Don’t forget to admire the fortifications as you go through the gateways, upstream or downstream.

We love the wonderful colours of the half-timbered houses in the village, as well as the Monday morning market, not to be missed.

The spectacular St Maurice Cathedral can boast a unique nave and also surprises visitors with its 60m-high spire. You can also admire the Gothic portal as you enter.

Our campsite is near Mirepoix, some 10 minutes away. Here you will find a whole host of shops, a baker’s, butcher’s and fishmonger’s, among others.
