MONTSEGUR CASTLE

30 minutes from the La Besse campsite: discover the Château de Montségur

A PLACE STEEPED IN HISTORY

A major Cathar site in the Ariège region, it lies directly opposite our estate.

You can have fun trying to guess its ramparts among the foothills of the Pyrenees by taking a seat in front of the campsite reception.

You’ll be stunned by its vertiginous position. During the winter of 1243-1244, 400 people entrenched themselves here for a long 11-month siege. Your thoughts will then turn to the 220 Cathars who, unwilling to renounce their faith, chose to die themselves at the stake lit below the castle on March 16, 1244. Thus sounded the foretold end of Catharism.

Guided tours of the château: May 1 to June 30: Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays at 2pm and 3pm; July 1 to August 31: daily at 11am, 1pm, 3pm and 4:30pm; September 1 to September 30: Saturdays and Sundays at 2pm and 3pm.

  • Step back in time to the 14th century as you stroll through Château de Foix, in the (virtual!) company of Gaston Fébus, or feel like one of the Count’s mercenaries as you try your hand at crossbow shooting at Château de Foix! The tour lasts 4 hours, through the museum and the château itself! Ideal for families!
  • Take a costumed tour of Château de Lagarde, and discover the famous “little ice palace” of the Pyrenees. These costumed tours, offered only in summer, are a must for children!
  • Enjoy a panoramic view of the Montségur pog from Roquefixade, the seemingly invincible fortress perched on its rock above the village. Roquefixade is a timeless site that can be visited all year round!
